JULIE 0:05

Welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth. Have you ever had to depend on someone who always seemed to be changing? It’s like you could never be sure what he or she might do? Our lesson today assures us that, unlike that person you might have in mind, God can always be depended upon.

James 1:16-17 in the NIV says, “Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters.  Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

In our previous lesson, we learned to never blame God when we are tempted to sin because God cannot entice us with evil. In verse 16, the original language seems to imply that the recipients were already falling into the temptation of believing that God tempts them to sin when He tested them with trials. And James is saying here, Stop this nonsense. See the truth here. Everything good in your life comes from God above.

Now, James is painting us a wonderful picture for us in verse 17. If you’re near a window, look outside. Do you see shadows on the ground or on buildings around you?  Are those shadows or areas of darkness caused because the sun quit shining? No, of course not.  Something is blocking the sun from shining fully. The sun, the moon, and the stars never stop giving us light.

And James is saying the same thing here about God. The Father who created all of those celestial, heavenly lights never changes. If you find darkness in your life, it’s not God who caused the darkness. He doesn’t change like those shifting shadows you see outside your window.

So, as you go out today, let the sun shining down on you and the shadows on the ground around you be a constant reminder that God can always be depended upon. Every good thing in your life comes from God. He is unchangeable and completely trustworthy. And that’s The Simple Truth.
