Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.

In Colossians chapter two, Paul agonizes and struggles in prayer for the believers in Colossae and Laodicea knowing that false teachers are preying on these believers convincing them that just knowing Jesus isn’t enough for salvation. One of the things Paul prays for is that the believers would have complete confidence in the fact that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself. Paul continues in verse 3 with, "in whom (meaning in Christ) are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."

Gnostics believed that no “ordinary” man could attain the elaborate knowledge that was necessary for salvation. It was only disclosed to an exclusive group of people. So, this verse here is basically a blow aimed at these false teachers.

I always love to picture the scene as this letter is being read aloud in the house church in Colossae. You’ve got all these people inside a large room, like a living room. You’ve got the Legalistic Jews and the Gnostics there, both of whom were trying to lead the believers away from the central message of the Gospel, that it’s Christ plus nothing equals everything.

And then you have the other believers who didn’t quite know what to believe anymore.

And as you get to this portion of the letter, you see the Gnostics start to get fidgety as Paul says (and of course I’m paraphrasing it) but, “You crazy, lying, deceitful Gnostics. You say have your hidden wisdom. Well, we too have our hidden knowledge. But it’s not found in any special book that no one can read or understand. These treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ. And therefore, it’s not a mystery anymore. It’s open and available to be understood by all men everywhere who believe in Jesus Christ the Messiah.”

So, your Simple Truth for today: In Christ, you find all the wisdom and knowledge that you need to gain life and how to live. How do you find it? By opening your Bible and reading. Understanding God’s Word gives you knowledge. As you meditate on that knowledge you gain wisdom and how to apply it to your life.
