Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.

James teaches us in the book of James that godly wisdom without outward evidence is dead. The idea is that If you live your life applying God’s wisdom, good fruit will naturally flow through your everyday interactions with others. And that good fruit is evidence of Godly wisdom working in your life. Today we’re looking at the fruit of impartiality and sincerity

James 3:17 says, “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”

James says that the evidence of true wisdom flowing through your life will be that you are impartial.

It’s interesting to note here that scholars aren’t 100% positive what this word means in the original language. This is the only place this word occurs in the New Testament.

So, it could mean that you are unwavering in your beliefs, meaning that you are consistent in what you believe. You don’t act one way this week, and another way next week because you’ve been persuaded by someone else’s beliefs. And we see James speak of this type of person in James 1:6, when he says, “Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.”

But. it could also mean that you don’t show favoritism. You treat everyone the same no matter who they are. And James speaks of this quite a bit in James 2 when he witnessed church members treating a rich man better than the poor man.

Clearly, either could work.

And lastly, a wise person is sincere. This word literally means “unhypocritical.” The Greek word for hypocrite can mean an “actor who played a role.” You see, in James’ culture, Roman actors wore large masks while performing. So when James says we are to be unhypocritical, he’s saying we don’t hide behind a mask pretending to be someone we aren’t. Our love for others is genuine and sincere. We don’t fake an attitude of love. We find ways to actively express God’s love to others.

Your Simple Truth for today: A wise person is undivided in their beliefs and sincere.
