How Do We Get Wisdom From God? | James 3:17 Part 1

How Do We Get Wisdom From God? | James 3:17 Part 1

BIBLE STUDY PODCAST

People are looking everywhere to find wisdom for their lives. Stacks of books are found in the library and bookstores that promise 3 steps to find wisdom.

Our world has a skewed idea of wisdom.

The world says we are successful when we have a big house, a large bank account, and high social standing. And to do whatever it takes, no matter the cost.

And yet, how many people do you know that once they’ve attained that big dream are still left empty? They may put on the facade of happiness, but if you listen to what they say, at the very core, you know they are left with an emptiness that money can’t cure. And if that describes you, I’ve got good news.

God tells us in James 1:5 to ask Him for wisdom and He will give it to us generously.

But how do we get wisdom from God?

In today's Simple Truth, James 3:17a tells us 3 specific things about Godly wisdom. If you need wisdom from God (and who doesn't), you'll want to listen to this episode first.

Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth

This past week we’ve been exploring in James Chapter 3 the characteristics and sources of earthly wisdom that only leave people in a world of disorder and chaos.

The next few episodes, we are going to discover true, godly wisdom. When you find true wisdom, it brings wholeness to your soul. It’s an inner peace that you won’t find following earthly wisdom.

The first portion of James 3:17 says, “But the wisdom from above is first pure”

There are three things I want us to notice here.

First, where does wisdom come from? James says this wisdom is from above. This is not wisdom found in the self-help section at your local bookstore. You can’t find this wisdom apart from a true relationship with God. So, how do we get wisdom? James 1:5 commands us, as God’s children, to ask God for wisdom and He will give it to us generously.

Secondly, there is a Godly order to receiving wisdom. Notice James says wisdom from God is “first pure.” There is a divine order to receiving wisdom.

And, thirdly, that divine order begins with purity. A pure heart is the foundation for receiving wisdom from God.

In the Greek language, the word used for “pure” does not mean sexual purity rather it means a life lived with inner purity. You do things with pure motives. It’s the opposite of someone who does things for personal selfish gain, only looking out for themselves. Someone with a pure heart can approach God with a sincere, honest heart that only wants what God wants.

You can truly ask God to search you to find any impure desires. It’s like praying, “God, if I’m doing anything with impure motives, please help me to surrender my will to Your will. Search me God and know my heart. Just like David said in Psalm 53, Create in me a clean heart, God. Renew a right spirit within me.”

Your Simple Truth for today: When you need wisdom from God, first come to Him with a pure heart.
