Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth

James has been teaching us about the power of being humble before God in the life of a believer. In James’ day, the Church was dealing with fights and bickering among the believers, and James says the reason was because that they were fighting a battle within themselves of selfish ambition and bitter envy which then manifested outwardly by fighting a battle with others.

And the truth is we’re still fighting this battle today.  How many times have you found yourself thinking, “I want what they have. I deserve what they have. I’ll do whatever it takes to get to the top”?

So, what do we do when Satan tempts us with those worldly thoughts that aim to separate us from God?

James tells us in Chapter 4 verse 7, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Yesterday we explored the first action item of “submit yourselves to God.” Today, we’re looking at the remainder of this verse, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

The word “resist” in the Greek language means “to take your stand against.” It continues with the military metaphor that we saw yesterday. You actively stand against the devils lies. You push him away.

You see, the devil will do everything within his power to make your thoughts turn towards ones of selfishness and greed. He will plant ideas in your head based on worldly wisdom, not godly wisdom. Wordly wisdom tells you it’s ok to hurt others if they get in your way of success. You deserve everything you want and desire. “If it feels good to you, then do it.” It’s ok to lie, cheat or steal. Worldly wisdom says, “A one night affair won’t hurt anyone.” Worldly wisdom says, “I don’t need to study God’s Word today.”

And resisting the devil is an every day action you take. This isn’t a one and done. The devil will tempt you again and again. No matter how strong of a Christian you are, you will still face temptation.

So what do you do to resist him? Jesus quoted him scripture when he was tempted in the wilderness. As a child of God, you can do the same. But you might be saying, “I’m a weak Christian. I don’t know God’s Word.” Then, continue listening to The Simple Truth podcast daily and I promise, you won’t be that weak Christian anymore that just rolls over and surrenders to the devil’s lies and tactics.

So your simple truth for today: Actively resist the devil’s temptations and watch him run with his tail between his legs.
