Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.

This week, Paul has been teaching us the essence of what a Christian life looks like. Yesterday, we learned 2 parts to the Christian life. You receive Christ Jesus the Lord by faith, and you continue to walk in Christ Jesus the Lord by faith. In today’s verse from Colossians 2 verse 7, Paul elaborates on what it means to live by faith as he gives us 4 metaphors.

He writes you walk out your faith by being (quote), “rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. (end quote)

First, you are rooted in Christ. This is the idea of a believer whose roots sink down deep into Jesus Christ drawing spiritual nourishment from Him alone

Second, you are built up in Christ. This metaphor refers to Christ being the structure that forms and builds your life

Third, you are strengthened in the faith. This word “strengthened” refers to being settled in reference to a legal document. It’s giving the idea of signing a legal document and making it into a law. In other words, I am so strong and so firm in what I believe it’s like a law that can’t be broken in my life. It’s settled. This is what I believe and that’s final.

And finally, the 4th metaphor of living by faith is overflowing with thankfulness. Paul uses the image of a flooding river. When we are flooded with thanksgiving for what Christ does in and through us, it overflows the banks of our lives. Someone who overflows with thanksgiving for what God has done will not be tempted to stray to other false teachings and worldly desires.

So, your Simple Truth for today: Paul gives us 4 great metaphors to describe living by faith: you are rooted in faith, built up in faith, strengthened by faith, and overflowing with gratitude.
