Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.

Yesterday, we looked at Paul’s prayer for the Colossians found here in chapter one, beginning in the 2nd part of verse 9, “We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives”

Paul begins by asking God to give them the knowledge of God’s will. Note that Paul didn’t ask for a new job or a new donkey. Instead he’s coming to God saying, “God reveal Your will to them.”

When we apply that prayer to ourselves, it shows us that we need to pray with spiritual ears ready to listen to God. It’s not, “God, I need you to do this and this.” Rather it’s, “God, what do you want me to do?”

Now, it’s important to note here that the first place God gives you knowledge is through the Bible. So, that means, if you want to know God’s will, you need to continue studying your Bible, like you’re doing here. You’re discovering what God’s plan is for man, and then as you understand God’s plan, you apply it to your life by asking yourself questions like, “Is what I’m doing bringing me closer to Christ? Does my decision honor God? Does it please Him?”

So, you could pray, “God help me know your will. Open my mind to understand the Bible and then reveal how to apply it to my everyday decisions or situations.”

Now, the question comes to me often, “How do I know when God is speaking to me?” Well, as we discussed, the greatest way He speaks to you is when you’re reading your Bible. It’s like the Holy Spirit highlights a verse or word to you. You may also hear God. And it most likely won’t be an audible voice. But rather it’s more like a gentle whisper you hear in your heart or mind, and if you don’t slow down to listen, you’ll miss Him completely. You may also be talking with a friend or listening to a preacher and they say something that just jumps out at you that you know God is helping you with a decision.

So, your Simple Truth for today: When you come to God in prayer, come ready to listen instead of giving God your laundry list of requests. Ask God what His will is and how to apply it to your life. It sounds almost too simple, doesn’t it? But if it’s good enough for the Apostle Paul and God included it in the Bible, then I believe that there is power like you’ve never experienced within that simple prayer. Amen?

Have a blessed day. I can’t wait to continue this with you tomorrow.
