Philippians 4:6 (NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Did you know that last year 88% of the people surveyed said the holiday season was the most stressful time of the year? AND that was BEFORE Covid wrecked our world.
What's God's solution to an anxious mind? Listen now to find out in only 2 minutes.
Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.
Today, we’re going to explore one of our greatest struggles and that is anxiety. In a survey taken last year in 2019, 88% of those surveyed said that the holiday season is the most stressful time of the year AND that was before this whole insane pandemic hit. You add COVID-19 into the mix of holiday stress and who knows what those numbers would be right now?!
So, what’s the answer here? Well, Paul tells us in Philippians four verses six and seven, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
So, First, Paul says, “Do not be anxious.”
The original Greek word comes from two Greek words put together. The first word means “to tear or to divide”. The second word means “the mind.” So, when you put those together, it means “to divide the mind.” When you’re anxious, your mind is divided between healthy thoughts and destructive thoughts.
Next, Paul tells us how to eliminate anxiety as he writes, “Do not be anxious about anything.” It’s interesting to note here that this isn’t a suggestion. In the original language this is written as a forceful command. Meaning, “Don’t worry about one single thing.”
Jesus used the same command in the Sermon on the Mount when he said, “Do not worry about your life.” That’s the same word. Now, notice, this doesn’t mean to kick back and be lazy. But rather, it’s like they’re saying don’t get yourself into such a state of panic that you can’t even hear God guiding you. Have you ever noticed that when you become anxious or panicked that your mind becomes cluttered with noise? I mean the last thing you can hear is God’s still small voice instructing you in the way you should go.
So, your Simple Truth for today: Anxiety is a destructive emotion that divides your mind. The good news is that God has the solution for anxiety.
