Praying for Knowledge of God | Colossians 1:10 (Part 5)

Praying for Knowledge of God | Colossians 1:10 (Part 5)

Colossians 1:9-10 (NIV) For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God

Have you ever wondered what God's will is for your life? Me, too.

Paul teaches us how to ask God for wisdom about His will in Colossians chapter one.

So far, we've learned to pray:

  1. God, show me your will and how to apply it to my life
  2. Help me live a life worthy of you, pleasing you in every way
  3. Help me bear good fruit

Today, we learn the fourth thing. This one request of God will open your eyes in an incredible way.

Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth

We’ve had the honor of studying Paul’s prayer for the believers in Colossae found in the first chapter of Colossians.

So, in the prayer so far, do you remember what 3 things Paul has prayed so far? One. That we would know God’s will and how to apply it to our lives. Two. That we would walk a life worthy of the Lord and pleasing Him in every way. And three. That we would bear good fruit.

So, picking back up Colossians chapter 1 verses 9-10, Paul says,

“We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God”

So the fourth thing Paul prays for is growth as in “growing in the knowledge of God.” Didn’t Paul already pray for knowledge? True, back in verse 9, Paul prayed that we would grow in the knowledge of God’s will. But here Paul is praying for more than just knowing God’s will.

The word Paul uses here for knowledge in the original Greek language is a type of knowledge that is beyond the normal physical world and everyday life kinda knowledge. It’s an experiential type of knowledge, meaning that you don’t just have intellectual knowledge about God, but rather you know God intimately.

True knowledge of God isn’t learned from books. You can only receive this type of knowledge when you have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. This type of knowledge only comes when the Holy Spirit illuminates your mind.

And how does that happen? When you pray this prayer that Paul’s teaching us. “God help me grow in the knowledge of you.” And then you study your Bible, just like you’re doing here, you take what you learn, and meditate on it. Ask God questions throughout the day like “God, show me more about what it means to grow in the knowledge of you?”

And, as we’ve discussed in a previous episode, this isn’t something you have to strive for. This simply happens to you as the Holy Spirit reveals things to you about God.

So your simple truth for today: This prayer that Paul prays is like a cycle. You seek God’s will which leads to you walk worthy of the Lord and pleasing him. Which leads to fruit being produced through good works which leads to knowledge of God. It’s an ever-continuing cycle that brings you closer to God. And before you know it, you’ll look back and see how far you’ve come in your relationship with God. God is so good. Amen?

Have a blessed day. I’ll see you soon.
