Did you know that in Tibet, people stick out their tongue to great one another? For real. What’s this have to do with today’s Simple Truth? Absolutely nothing. Lol.
Seriously, though, James is teaching us a lot about the tongue in Chapter 3. And while greeting one another with our tongues isn’t on his agenda, what we say to others and to God with our tongue is.
In James 3:3-4 James gives us two very common illustrations to show the power that we have with our tongue. James says in the NIV, “When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.”
James used 2 simple images from nature to help the reader visualize his point. Both the horse and the ship are massive and powerful in size in comparison to the object that controls their direction. But each of them goes wherever the rider or pilot directs them.
And the same thing applies for that 3” muscular organ inside your head. Despite its small size in proportion to the rest of your body, it can literally determine the direction of your entire life. Your destiny depends upon the control you have over it.
Proverbs 18:21 says “The tongue has the power of life and death.” Today you have a powerful weapon in your possession. With every word that you say, you not only have the power to encourage and lift yourself up, but you also have the power to lift others up as well. And that’s The Simple Truth.
