"I love trials," said no one ever. And yet, James begins his entire letter to the dispersed Christian Jews teaching them to find joy in the midst of their trials. Why? And what's God's ultimate purpose?

Join us on today's The Simple Truth as we dig deeper to understand more of James 1:3-4. Because this ONE SINGLE TRAIT will cause you to become equipped and ready to be used by God for the purpose that He created you for.

JULIE 0:05

What exactly is God trying to do when He tests you?

Yesterday,  we examined the simple truth that God uses trials to test your faith. But what is God’s ultimate end goal behind all of this?

In James 1:3 in the NIV we read “because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

The last thing most of us want to do is to stay in the middle of a painful test or trial. But the word perseverance helps us to dig deeper and understand what God's ultimate purpose is.

In the original language, perseverance means patience or endurance. To be steadfast or unwavering.

In other words, the testing of your faith produces an attitude that never gives up. You refuse to surrender.  As trials come your way, you turn down every opportunity to quit.

This word perseverance had the idea of soldiers who were ordered to maintain their positions no matter what opposition they faced. They had to stand their ground and defend what had been gained until the enemy retreated. It was not a question of “IF” you win your battle, but rather “WHEN” you win your battle.

James continues in James 1:4 by saying “Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

The original recipients of this letter were facing major persecution as a result of their beliefs.

I believe what James is saying here to them AND to you is, "Hey I know what you’re facing is hard, and you probably want to retreat, but persevere, hold your ground. Let God finish what He started. When you do you will be complete and spiritually mature and You will be fit for the purpose God created you for."
