What Did You Do to Make God Test You? | An In-Depth Look at James 1:3

What Did You Do to Make God Test You? | An In-Depth Look at James 1:3

What are you doing wrong? Why is God testing you again? Join us on The Simple Truth 2-Minute Bible Study as we dig deeper to understand more of James 1:3 (NIV) which says, "because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

The word imagery that James uses in the original language for TESTING is fascinating and helps us understand exactly what God is doing. I think you're going to look at testing in a whole new light after this lesson.

JULIE 0:05

Do you ever wonder if you’ve done something wrong when you encounter tests or trials in your life? Like maybe God is punishing you? If so, you’re not alone.

Yesterday, we learned that we should rejoice when facing trials because we know that God uses those trials to prepare us for something bigger. But why would God want you to respond to bad things with joy?

Great question.

We begin to find our answer when we dig deeper into James 1:3 in the NIV which says, “because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

Testing is a term the silversmiths would use at the time of this writing to test silver. They would put silver in a pot. They would heat it up and all the impurities would rise to the surface. As it did, the silversmith would scrape the impurities off and then heat the silver up again.

He would do this process over and over again until he could see his own reflection in the silver. At that point, he knew the silver was pure.

I love this visual image here.

You see, trials TEST your faith to show if it’s genuine. It exposes what you really believe or don't believe…the true nature of you is revealed.

In other words, do you believe and stand firm on God’s promises or do you become bitter and revert to your old way of doing things?

God’s purpose is to never hurt or harm you. His purpose is to purify you and refine you, to help you grow spiritually. So that, just like the silversmiths, He can look down at you and see His own image.
