What Does Colossians 1:6 Mean?

What Does Colossians 1:6 Mean?

Colossians 1:3–6 (NIV): 3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people—5 the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel 6 that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace.

In today's 2-minute Bible study podcast, Paul continues his prayer of thanksgiving for the believers in Colossae.

Heretical teachings were creeping into the church causing new believers to drift away from the true gospel message.

How does Paul combat this?

How does this apply to us today?

Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.

We’ve been studying Paul’s prayer of thanksgiving to the believers in Colossae found in chapter one of Colossians. Paul has declared that Jesus Christ is Lord and that there no one above him. And there are 3 virtues that form the bedrock of Christianity - faith, hope and love.

Continuing with his prayer, in Colossians chapter one beginning back in verse 3 thru 6, “We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people—5 the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and (notice where Paul says here) about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel 6 that has come to you.

So, Paul says your faith and love continue to grow because of the hope you have in your reward reserved for you in heaven. And you have had this hope ever since you first heard the true message of the Gospel.

But why does Paul say this? That they’ve already heard the true message of the gospel?

In that small community of Colossae, heretical teachings began creeping into the church, causing the believers to drift away from what they’d learned. These believers were being taught a religious idea called Gnosticism. The word Gnosticism comes from the Greek word gnosis, meaning “knowledge.” They believed there was secret knowledge reserved for those with true understanding. And this mysterious knowledge they possessed was the key to eternal salvation. Believing in Jesus wasn’t enough.

But Paul says, “Guys, you had it right from the beginning when you heard the true message of the gospel and that message transformed you. But not only did it transform you, but, Paul writes in verse 6, “In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace.”

So, what’s Paul doing here? He’s giving them social proof that the gospel message is bearing fruit throughout the whole world. It’s as if he’s saying, “Look, others are hearing and believing the same gospel message that you heard. That is Christ plus nothing equals everything. You don’t need some secret knowledge to find eternal salvation. You already have everything you need.

So, your Simple Truth for today: While we may not deal with Gnosticism today, we do have the world questioning our belief in God and Jesus. But just like the believers in Colossae, the gospel message you heard is bearing fruit in your life. How do I know that? Because you are listening to this podcast. There is a hunger within you to know God more. That doesn’t come from the world, my friend. That hunger is from the Holy Spirit within you. So, thank you for being obedient and discovering more of the true message of the gospel.

Have a blessed day. I’ll see you soon.
