What Does Colossians 2:17 Mean?

What Does Colossians 2:17 Mean?

Colossians 2:16-17 (NIV) 16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.

In our study in the book of Colossians chapter 2, we’ve learned that we are fully alive, fully forgiven and fully victorious in Christ. But once you embrace that fulness, you’ll find people who will come and set legalistic boundaries around what you can and cannot do. Picking up from yesterday’s verse in Colossians chapter 2 verse 16, Paul warns us by saying “Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.”  And verse 17 “These things are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.”

Paul says the laws that the Jewish people strictly followed in the Old Testament foreshadowed what was to come, that is the coming of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.  And Paul says that those who insist we continue following these laws fail to understand that their fulfillment has already taken place in Christ Jesus.

What exactly was the purpose of these laws originally? When God gave these laws, it was to point to what was coming. So the dietary rules taught people about purity so that when TRUE purity came in the form of Christ, the people would recognize it. All of those religious festivals got people to thinking about substitutional atonement. So that when Jesus came and voluntary sacrificed himself for us, it made sense to those who understood these things. The Sabbath rest practiced by the Israelites in the Old Covenant pointed towards the true rest that we now have within us because we are now fully alive in Christ.

So your Simple Truth for today. All of the religious laws in the Old testament were signs pointing to Jesus who fulfilled the law. We are not made right by the works of the law, but rather by our faith in Jesus Christ alone. But Paul warns us that there are people who will still come along and try to place legalistic boundaries on you.

Have a blessed day. I’ll see you again tomorrow.
