Colossians 2:20-21 (NIV) Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”?
Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.
In Colossians chapter two, Paul warns us of several things now that we are fully in Christ. First, beware of those who try and set legalistic boundaries on us. He also warned us of spiritual mystics trying to disqualify our salvation because we don’t worship angels and have these grandiose visions that elevate our spiritual status
Today in verse 20, Paul warns us of personal legalism as he writes, “Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”
Paul’s saying through Christ, you have given your life fully to Christ and you died to the powers and authorities of this world, why in the world are you submitting to them again? Christ has authority over everything, including all the angels and evil spirits. And since you are fully alive in Christ, Paul wants to know why you’re going back into your old sinful life?
So, you might ask, well, Paul how am I falling backwards? He tells us right here in verse 21, you submit to its rules “Do not handle. Do not taste. Do not touch.” Now, Paul is not saying throw off all boundaries and eat as much as you want. Or drink as much as you want to the point of intoxication.” But it appears that these believers were carrying the “do nots” and “shall nots” from the Old Testament laws to the extreme.
In 1 Timothy 4 verse 3, Paul writes, “They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.”
I believe we can safely assume that these legalistic boundaries the believers set on themselves came from the Gnostic’s false teachings that the material world was evil. They taught that the less contact you have with the evil physical world, the better.
So, your Simple Truth for today: Jesus taught us that it’s not what you put in your body that makes it impure. What defiles a person comes from the heart.
Have a blessed day. I’ll see you again tomorrow.
