Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.

In Colossians chapter 3 the Apostle Paul has given us sins to avoid and positive behaviors to emulate as followers of Christ. Yesterday, we learned that we are to let God’s Word make its home within us and as we do songs of thankfulness and praise will overflow from within.

In today’s verse, Paul summarizes his teaching of the past several verses as he writes in verse 17, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

I love the New Living Translation. It says, “And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.”

In other words, Paul is saying anything I failed to mention in the previous sentences, every single thing you do, whether you’re speaking or doing, you are to do it all as a representative of the Lord Jesus.

What’s Paul doing here? Remember in Colossae there were false teachers infiltrating the church saying you aren’t truly saved unless your follow certain rules like you must eat this and not that. You must celebrate these particular holidays or worship angels or become circumcised. And Paul comes in and says your relationship with Christ has nothing to do with following some stupid set of rules.

Instead, the question becomes, as a fully devoted follower of Christ is what I am doing or what I am thinking honoring to God? Am I accurately reflecting Christ and his Holy name? When people see me, do they see Christ in me?

So, your Simple Truth for today: As a Christian, you represent Christ at all times. And here’s a question for you to ponder…When people see you today, what impression will you leave for them of Christ?

Have a blessed day. I’ll see you again tomorrow.
