Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.

In chapters one and two of Colossians, Paul lays down a solid foundation on who Christ is. And just to refresh our memory here. Christ is the image of the invisible God. He is the firstborn over all creation. There has never been a time when Jesus Christ did not exist. Everything was created through Him and for Him. He is supreme over all creation. There is no one or no thing above him. He is the head of the Church. God exists fully in Christ in human form. Jesus reconciled us to God by shedding his blood on the cross. He forgives ALL your sins, past present and future.

And now picking up in Colossians chapter three verse two and three, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”

Paul says set your minds on things above. The Greek word used for “set” in this verse, means “to seek after, strive for, be intent on.”And, this is written in a tense that indicates number one) a command and number two) it is to happen continuously. This is a choice we have to make constantly. I don’t know about you, but this is something I struggle with. Paul says set your mind on things above. Look at life from God’s perspective. Seek after what God desires. And as you do, you surrender your desire for “earthly” things as Paul calls them.

Christ is to be our focus. Not material possessions, or honor, or prestige. Why? Because we died to our old life, our old behaviors. We are now hidden with Christ in God.

William Barclay’s commentary notes that the Greeks would say that when someone died and was buried, they were hidden in the earth. Paul takes that idea and applies it to the Christian life. For us, we are not hidden in the earth, but rather we are hidden in Christ. You now have full access to a relationship with God and Jesus Christ. Your salvation is secure, you are protected from the spiritual evil, and all of God’s blessings belong to you as a follower of Christ.

So, your Simple Truth for today: When you find your mind going into a funk, check your thought life. Are you seeking after, striving for, and setting your mind on things above? And the number one way to seek after God is to study His Word.

Have a blessed day. I’ll see you again tomorrow.
