What Does Marilyn Monroe Have to Do With God's Wisdom? | James 3:17 Part 3

GOD'S WISDOM

There's no denying that Marilyn Monroe is a Hollywood Legend. But many people said she had a bad habit that often left her co-stars waiting for hours.

So, what's this have to do with the Bible?

That's a great question!

Today, we're continuing to explore the characteristics of God's Wisdom. It would seem that Marilyn (and many of us) tend to score on the lower end of this godly characteristic.

Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.

Did you know that Marilyn Monroe never seemed to show up on time to her movie sets? She even said it herself  “I am invariably late for appointments – sometimes as much as two hours. I’ve tried to change my ways but the things that make me late are too strong and too pleasing.”

What’s this have to do with the Bible? Great question! We’ve been studying the characteristics of godly wisdom versus worldly wisdom in James Chapter 3. A wise person is considerate of others. And you might say someone who's always keeping others waiting isn’t being the most considerate of a person’s time or feelings.

James 3:17 says, “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”

James tells us that a natural byproduct of a wise person is being considerate of others.

In William Barclay’s commentary, he says that it’s impossible to find an English word that translates this quality James is speaking of here.

It’s the idea of respecting the feelings of others. You treat others how you want to be treated, and you don’t seek revenge or hatred towards others. You are kind and fair to anyone, even those who are challenging and offensive. Do you handle disagreements and difficulties without becoming violent or hot-tempered? If so, then you are a wise person.

Another byproduct of godly wisdom is being submissive. This is the opposite of being stubborn, stiff. It’s the idea of being approachable, open to reason. Can someone come talk with you, and even if you disagree with what they say, are you are willing to listen and be open to their point of view? And, if you are in the wrong, you’re willing to make a change. If so, you’re a wise person.

Your Simple Truth for Today:  A truly wise person is respectful of others' feelings as well as approachable and open to correction.
