Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth

In Philippians chapter 3, Paul encourages the believers in Philippi to find their joy in Christ because there were “mutilators of the flesh,” as Paul called them, trying to steal their joy. It seemed that everywhere Paul taught, Judaizers would be anxiously waiting to storm in right after Paul left to teach the new followers that you aren’t truly saved unless you were circumcised like the Jewish faith commanded. And Paul says that’s utter nonsense as he writes in Philippians chapter 3 verse 3, “For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.”

Paul says that we are the circumcision. Meaning you don’t need to do anything to your flesh outwardly to make you clean. You are already clean because you’ve given your heart to Christ.

Paul gives us 3 signs that you are a Christian.

First, you serve and worship God in your spirit. Worship isn’t about doing things for God. You don’t have to mutilate your flesh or perform animal sacrifices inside a temple to worship God. It’s all done within you, within your spirit.

Second, you only boast or rejoice in Christ Jesus. You can’t take any credit for your salvation.

And Third, you don’t have confidence in your own flesh, meaning that you don’t depend on your own abilities to give you eternal life.

See, the Jews took incredible pride in what they could do, like being circumcised. They were proud of being descendants of Abraham. They were proud of their laws and their ceremonies. But none of these things will give you an eternal life with Christ.

So, your Simple Truth for today: There is nothing that you by your own strength or in your own flesh can do to receive eternal life except believe in Jesus Christ. That’s it. It’s Christ plus nothing equals everything. (Christ + nothing = everything)
